You open the monitoring plan for a new study and read a sentence that would have been unthinkable 15 years ago: "Approximately 60% of source data verification will be conducted remotely, with centralized statistical monitoring across all sites and risk-triggered on-site visits as warranted." There is no schedule of monthly site visits. No block of conference room time to reserve. No week of binder preparation. Instead, the monitoring strategy describes three distinct activities -- remote SDV, centralized data review, and triggered on-site visits -- operating continuously rather than episodically.
If your first reaction is relief, you are not alone. Remote monitoring eliminates the logistical burden of hosting multi-day site visits. But if your second reaction is uncertainty about what this means for your daily work, that instinct is sound. Remote monitoring does not reduce the CRC's data quality responsibilities. In many ways, it amplifies them.
