In the previous lesson, you encountered the idea that changed everything about how coordinators should think about quality: proportionality. Not every task carries equal risk. Not every error produces equal harm. The five-second triage--is this correctable or irreversible?--gave you a personal decision tool for allocating attention in real time.
But proportionality, by itself, is incomplete. It tells you to think differently. It does not tell you what, specifically, to watch. It is like being told to drive more carefully without being told where the blind curves are.
This lesson fills that gap. Here, you will learn a concept that gives the proportionality principle its operational teeth: Critical to Quality factors. These are the specific processes, data points, and activities in a clinical trial where failure poses the greatest threat to participant protection and data reliability. They are, in effect, the blind curves--the places in your daily work where an error is not merely inconvenient but consequential.
And I want to be direct about why this matters to you personally. A coordinator who understands CTQ factors does not merely perform tasks. That coordinator understands why certain tasks demand the highest concentration, can explain that reasoning to colleagues and investigators, and--most importantly--builds habits that protect those critical processes even on the worst days. That is the difference between a coordinator who follows procedures and one who genuinely safeguards the trial.
